He has maintained his reputation as an outstanding celebrity portraitist with his widely published photographs of nationally and internationally well known figures. In addition to many publications of McDonald’s celebrity portraits (individually and as published series), an in-depth cover story about McDonald’s career appeared in Photo District News (Oct 1993), accompanied by eleven of his color and black-and-white portraits. Other feature articles on his work were published in the St. Louis Post-Dispatch (1993), The Santa Fe New Mexican (1989), San Francisco Examiner’s Image (1989), and San Francisco: The Magazine (1988). McDonald’s portraits have also appeared in the Smithsonian American Art Museum’s American Art 2005; American Photographer’s special 1991 issue, 100 Famous Americans’ Favorite Portraits (of Robert Mondavi); Communication Arts (1991, 2007); San Francisco Focus (1991-93); Vogue; Paris Vogue; and Interview. His Positive Negatives portraits have been widely published in the former Soviet Union and featured in the largest circulation Russian-language newspaper in the United States (1991).
